Recent Events

Posted 19 October 2009: So much has happened since our last report.

At our meeting late in June, Jane Markwell handed over the Presidency to Margaret Norman. The photograph below shows their smiling faces as Jane presents Margaret with the chain of office.

Members welcomed Margaret as she told them of her hopes for the current year. Margaret has chosen the NSPCC as her charity and events will be held to raise money to support their work.

In July we held our annual 'Meet the Presidents' Sunday lunch in the garden of Graham and Jane Markwell. This was an opportunity for our new President Margaret and the new Rotary President, Graham Markwell, to start their respective years off on a happy note. Despite inclement weather a good lunch was enjoyed (under cover) outside. A picture of the two Presidents together and other photos of the day can be found on the Rotary website in the 'Recent Events' section.

Derenda Welbourne-Hull has been inducted into the Club and the photograph below shows her being welcomed by President Margaret. Derenda is the daughter of Monica, our Overseas Chair, and we are all delighted that she has decided to join Mum in the fellowship of Inner Wheel.

During September we have helped our rotary Club by providing food for the finish of their Charity Horseride. Burgers, bacon, eggs, sausages, onions, drinks and sweets were all available for the hungry riders as they returned. The photographs below show members enjoying the breezy conditions!

Also in September, our Club meeting was attended by new District Chairman Mary Pay and the members were pleased to meet her and to hear news of the District Committee. the picture below shows our President Margaret presenting a gift to the District Chairman.

Future events planned include the Overseas 'Knit and Natter' evening on 12th October. This is a popular social evening as well as giving members the opportunity to help make items to send overseas.

In our October meeting the speaker will be Linda Smith - Florist.

In our November meeting new member Derenda Welbourne-Hull will be speaking to us.

Other charity events are a Flower Demonstration in March, a Race Night in May and a joint Barn Dance with Rotary in June.

Posted 16 June 2009: 22nd Charter Anniversary 7 June 2009.
Attended by about 80 people the 22nd Charter lunch was a resounding success at Cleve Lodge, Long Eaton. The usual Candle Lighting Ceremonies were followed by an excellent Sunday lunch and a fascinating talk entitled "The Land of the Unexpected" by Ken & Liz Pye on their voluntary service time in Indonesia.

ABOUT US

We are an enthusiastic group of Rotary wives/partners  who also want to put something back into the community.  Our aims follow those of Rotary in terms of intent, however our method of execution is very different.

For a start we look to have as much fun as possible – whilst being as effective as possible.

Members can take part in activities that benefit the local community, overseas charities, and various emergency aid projects.

We meet once a month at The Royal Oak, Ockbrook, Derby and enjoy a swift meeting and well prepared meal.  If members wish they can become involved in the committee with a further committee meeting approximately once every 6-8 weeks.

A charity is chosen by the President for that year, most fund raising efforts are then directed towards this charity. One of our favourite social/fundraising events is the Safari Supper.  This involves members and their partners meeting at one members home for a starter before separating into groups of 6-8 who travel to different members homes for their main course.  Dessert is usually at the President’s home and calorific value of the dishes on offer is strictly not for discussion!

We also support various overseas charities and have an Overseas Service Organiser who collates the various requests for assistance that we have been sent and ensures members are aware of those we choose to support.  There are often many deserving causes and the task of choosing which to support is quite a task.

We sometimes hold Jumble Sales or collect unwanted toiletries, costume jewellery or make-up for Joy Bags that are distributed to areas of extreme hardship.  We also make Baby Bundles and Toy Bags that can also be distributed to similar areas.  One of a smaller but never the less important projects has been collecting bags of pasta from family and friends for distribution to Bosnia, or the knitting of foot warmers for babies and young children in an orphanage in Rumania.

This is just a taste of the activities in which our Inner Wheel Club takes part.  If you would like more information on membership or just a general chat about what being a member entails, email from the link at the top of this page. Go to top of page
